Free Crochet Pattern - Photo by Susan Caplan McCarthyEven if the only thing you learned or remember from crochet is how to make a simple chain of stitches then you can make a headband to match any outfit. This is also a fun way to add a bit of holiday color when you don’t feel like wearing green and red or orange and black from head-to-toe. One headband requires just scraps of yarn. You can make each headband unique by mixing different texture yarns as well as different colors.
Craft MaterialsYou will need scraps of yarn. You can make a headband from a single type of yarn or you can mix three-to-six different types of yarn. Use any combination of yarns so that you work with six different strands or two strands each of three different yarns, or any mixture you desire.
You can use different sized crochet hooks, anything from a J through a P-size hook. Again, subtle changes will allow you to create a variety of different looks.
Free Crochet Pattern for a HeadbandYou can make a skinny headband by using three crocheted chains of yarn. With each chain that you add, the headband will become thicker and wider. The other element that determines the look of your headband is the type of yarn you use. Three crocheted chains of a thick yarn will make a wide headband and six crocheted chains of a baby-weight yarn will make a delicate headband.
Why play around with different textures and thicknesses of yarn? Because you can easily create a variety of looks by following the same simple craft pattern with no extra effort.
Measure six-inches of yarn from the end and make a slip knot.Chain enough stitches to make a strip approximately 30” long.Fasten off and cut a tail of yarn six inches long.Repeat three-to-six times, creating chains using the same or different colors or textures of yarn.Take the crocheted chains and hold them next to one another. Knot the strands together. Wrap the headband around your head, going underneath your hair, so you can judge the length that you need. Knot the two ends together and slide the headband on and off your head a couple of times to make certain that you have the correct tautness. You neither want your headband to slip off or give you a headache. Trim the excess yarn.Another option is to braid the crocheted chains together before knotting the two ends. This quick and easy craft allows you to create hundreds of different looks. Change the color yarns, the textures, the combinations of colors or textures, and even try braiding the strands together. In twenty or so minutes you can create a headband to match any outfit you are wearing.
